| History |
| Saint Anthony's of Padua Parish was founded on June 13,
1928. The Italian immigrants on the west side of the Susquehanna River
desired their own church in Exeter. They organized, saved money, and
even mortgaged their homes to buy a small piece of land on Memorial
Street and build a church. Their dream became a reality on St. Anthony's
feast day when St. Anthony of Padua Italian Catholic Church on Memorial
Street was dedicated by the Most Rev. Thomas C. O'Reilly, the third
Bishop of Scranton. The Rev. Alphonsus T. Manley of Scranton Diocese was
named the first pastor of St. Anthony's. The Oblates of St. Joseph have staffed
the Parish since 1930. |
